Let's start with the 49‑note velocity‑ and aftertouch‑sensitive keyboard. Like its siblings, the Laboratory combines three elements: a keyboard controller, a large library of editable sounds based on the company's existing V-series soft synths, and a separate software package that allows users to configure the keyboard for use with other software. My review of the curent two products in the series - the Player and the Factory (see Sound On Sound January 2011) - suggested that they provide an interesting set of facilities in a novel fashion at an attractive price, but what of the Laboratory? Could there be room above the Factory for a bigger and better 'Experience', or were Arturia attempting to slice the virtual analogue soft synth market just a little too thinly? (As we were going to press, Arturia announced a 61‑note version of the Laboratory, but this review will concentrate on the 49‑note model.) Physically Speaking When I first read about the flagship of Arturia's Analogue Experience ('AE') series, I wondered whether there would be any demand for another product based on the company's existing analogue modelling technology. Just lots of static sub which is the equivalent on some level of sticking Klopfgeist on a channel (VCOs, apparently, Klopfgeist).ĬP-70 is the one I'm interested in plus the MiniFreak. The latest addition to Arturia's Analog Experience series takes their hybrid software/hardware synth concept even further. I like the Voyager for live, if I had had a) gigs b) money and c) time at any point in my life I would have built a live set around one but I those big Turbo Sound Rigs hide the fact that they don't have much character. But for jungle especially I'd love to know a few tunes that used one. I'm looking forward to having a go patching between the pedals. It's so odd to say this but whenever it's done in the modern world it's just so plastic. Mariana is honestly trash as well, so far I can't get with it. But more often than not I'll end up thinning it down to two because you're just adding to the lack of headroom. The three osc architecture is cool of course. I've only played an 'old' Moog once maybe but it's a different kettle of fish, they sound a lot more resonant and rasping than people assume. Maybe this one will finally prove me wrong but they all seem to sound more Voyager than Minimoog the emus. I honestly don't need to ever hear that instrument in my life once again unless it's on a Dr. Seems like a bit or a weird way to celebrate the tenth iteration of your collection.Īlso Minimoog - who cares. As it is you can't help but feel a bit irritated they didn't include those releases with 9 for pre-owners and then get some more stuff out there for X. Not generally a fan of this kind of cynicism (lie) but they should have held back on Minifreak and Acid V until V X came out so it looked like there was more to be had for the upgrade.
